Now for todays "holiday favorites" post:
I'd share as this is a very unique treat I grew up with. It's a Hungarian treat so it's kind of hard to give it a name in English. It's called "Bejgli" in Hungarian but for your sakes we'll call them...I don't know....Hungarian walnut swirls??
Here is what you need to make these:
1 3/4 cup warm milk
1 egg
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup oil
1/2 cup butter
4 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp instant yeast
Filling:(more or less depending on how thick you sprinkle the filling on the dough)
about 3 cups walnuts
1 1/2 cups sugar
grated rind of about 2 lemons
egg wash for the tops
Let your bread machine mix and rise your dough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When dough is risen divide it into 3 or 4 equal portions depending on how large you want your finish treats to be! I divided mine into 4 portions.
Roll each portion out thinly and spread with butter and sprinkle with filling.
How to make the filling:
In a blender place 1 cup walnuts, 1/2 cup sugar and the grated peel of half a lemon. Blend until powdery or VERY small crumbs. I do mine on the "grind" setting. Sprinkle over rolled out dough.
Roll dough up (like a cinnamon roll) and place on greased cookie sheet.
Spread with egg wash and bake for about 25 minutes in a 450F oven. Then cover with tin foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes or so.Allow to cool completely before slicing
